What Happens After an Arrest? 

When an arrest has been made the police officer conducting the arrest will transport the defendant to the local jail or courthouse. Once there, the defendant will begin what is called the booking process. Most Americans are familiar with the booking process thanks to popular crime shows and movies. However due to the vague nature that Hollywood portrays this process very few actually know what it entails. Overall it is very simple. 

Basic Information 

During the booking process the defendant will provide the person conducting the process with their basic information. This includes their name, birth date, physical description, and current address if available. 

Fingerprints and Mugshots 

Probably the most familiar part of the booking process – fingerprints and mugshots are taken of the defendant. The fingerprints are run through a national and in some cases international database to see if they match any existing cases. The mugshots are also check to see if they match the description of any existing cases. 

Belongings are Confiscated 

When someone has been arrested their personal belongs such as purses, wallets, cell phones, etc are confiscated. These belongings are locked away in a secure place either at the jail or courthouse. After the defendant is released their personal belongings are returned to them.
